Open Invitation for Healthcare at Butler Forum

$

0

Please join us for an open forum on healthcare costs and benefits at Butler. Two sessions will be available:

  • Friday, Sept. 20, 1:30-3 p.m. in Jordan Hall, Room 141
  • Monday, Sept. 23, 9:30-11 a.m. in Robertson Hall, Johnson Room

The purpose of this forum is to prepare faculty and staff for the 2014 benefits open enrollment period in late October, and to discuss some of the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead as we strive to continue providing high quality health benefits to the Butler community.

As a self-insured organization since 2007, the University pays the actual costs associated with each insurance claim. This approach reduces Butler’s exposure to the rapidly growing cost of private insurance and allows us to benefit from successful cost containment efforts.  It also means, however, that the University assumes responsibility for expenses that are higher than anticipated. With healthcare costs at Butler up 28 percent in just the last two years and continuing to trend higher, it is likely that changes to plan design and/or premiums will be required in years to come. We hope that by being transparent about our healthcare costs, we can work together to find the best path forward.

In the upcoming forum, we’ll share more details on our healthcare cost trends and discuss programs/benefits in which Butler has invested to promote wellness and empower better healthcare decisions, including:

  • Healthy Horizons, which provides free health education, risk assessment, and wellness support.
  • Castlight Health, which lets you compare local medical providers and see personalized cost estimates before you go to the doctor.
  • Annual physicals and recommended screenings, which are provided with no out-of-pocket costs across all Butler health plans, when using in-network providers.

By utilizing these programs and taking a more proactive role in your health, you can have a significant impact on your health and healthcare costs, regardless of the plan in which you are enrolled. Being more proactive in your healthcare also benefits the entire Butler community by reducing the overall cost of claims and allowing the University to keep benefits strong and premium costs low.

We hope to see many of you at one of these forums.

Remember that feeling your first days on campus as a new Butler employee?  Did it feel at all like the first day of high school all over again?  Not really sure where to go for lunch; who is whom and how you’re supposed to interact with them; uneasy in your own environment…

Staff Assembly is hoping to change all of that with our new staff mentoring program.  Think of this as an opportunity to reach out to the new kids and show them around a little.  If you’re interested in becoming a part of our outreach efforts and sharing your best Butler stories with new staff, please email Judy Gonzalez and let her know!

We will be bringing all of our new mentors together soon to chat about how we might best serve the needs and interests of new staff, and we’d love to have you there!

You also are encouraged to attend one of the following scheduled Open Enrollment Sessions to learn more about this year’s changes:

Friday, November 8:
11:00 a.m.–noon / GH 108

As described at September’s Healthcare Benefits Forums, several factors were taken into consideration before changes were finalized for 2014 healthcare plans. These included claims trends for the current year, forecasted claims for the upcoming year, scope of plan benefits, general growth of medical costs outside of Butler’s control, and external benchmarks. Also impacting healthcare plans for 2014 is federal healthcare reform, which impacts plans through both fees and taxes that the University must pay. Also as a result of healthcare reform, Butler is offering a larger scope of no-cost benefits to participants, placing additional economic pressure on the plans.

If no changes were made to current healthcare plans, the average premium increase in 2014 would be 13.8 percent, 3 percent of which is a direct result of fees and taxes associated with healthcare reform. In an effort to keep plan increases below 10 percent and continue offering all four healthcare plans, the following changes will take effect in 2014:

  • Premium increases for medical plans:No premium increases for dental or vision plans.
    • CDHP (Consumer Driven Health Plan): 4 percent
    • Core Plan: 8.5 percent
    • Buy-Up Plan: 9.5 percent
    • Plus Plan: 9.75 percent
  • Increase emergency room co-pays from $150 to $175; urgent care co-pays will increase from $50 to $75.
  • Increase deductibles ($250 individuals; $625 family) and out-of-pocket maximums ($250 individuals; $500 family) for all PPO plans.
  • Increase office and specialist visit co-pays by $5-$10 for the Plus Plan.
  • Decrease co-insurance by 5 percent for Core and Buy-Up and 10 percent for Plus.
  • Increase Health Savings Account (HSA) contributions for CDHP ($150 individual; $300 family).
  • HSA Authority is the new provider for Health Savings Accounts.
  • One America is the new provider for life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, travel assist, and the employee assistance program.

Key Enrollment Information
